  1. We have been walking and spending time at the lake practically every day since we bought a share in spring 2020. Watching the wildlife and enjoying the natural surroundings has helped us maintain our physical and mental well-being during the challenges of the past 2 years. We consider buying a share to have been the best action we have taken to care for our natural environment and wildlife. Over this time our enjoyment of the lake has been added to by the addition of Muriel’s Marsh, discovering more plant species than we’d previously known. We are so grateful for all the dedicated hard work put in by committee members, angling club members and other volunteers who have created safe pathways and cleared impenetrable areas. Clearing of household and other rubbish that had been discarded on this land has been a mammoth task and we have been inspired by the team who have given so much time and energy to do this. Thank you, this lake and area of conservation means so much to us.

    • We are so happy with the work that has been done around Muriel’s Marsh. It now means we have direct access to the lake and me and my family spend so many happy times walking around this area. It is so special to me and I feel so lucky that my children get to grow up in this beautiful area. Thank you to everyone who has been involved in this.

  2. A round of applause and grateful thanks must go to the volunteers that have transformed Muriel’s Marsh. Though a work in progress, it’s an absolute delight to walk through this area on the newly created path and marvel at the unique vegetation and landscape, that had been inaccessible until now.
    Well done, guys!

  3. Hi there

I’ve been looking around areas local to me for quieter fishing spots where i can come for a quiet spot of fishing.

How would i go about paying my annual fee and obtaining a permit?

  4. I had no idea that the lake was formed so long ago. Of course, there must have been water running down from the Lickey Hills since the ice age, which presumably created the bog?

It would be nice to have a full and precise history of the lake published on this website. Some years ago, a pamphlet was written and distributed by Cofton Parish Council which went into some detail of the history, but this was derided as inaccurate by certain members but with a promise that the full and detailed history would be published . We’re still waiting!

    • Hi there

I’d be more than happy to publish a history page on this website, in fact it would be great to do. What we need is for the members to pool their knowledge and come up with an article. We could add any old photos that exist as well as create a timeline for Cofton Lake.

Who wants to start collating information?

  5. There has been a lot of good maintenance work undertaken recently around the lake, and thanks are due to all concerned. While much of the work is good, I was sorry to see the galvanised metal handrails that have been fitted. The material is not very sympathetic to the conservation objective of the Lake Association, and I wonder if the handrail itself (not the uprights) could be replaced in timber. what do others think?
On another subject, after looking on Wikipedia, I notice that the lake was first formed in 1815. If this information is correct, this is the lake’s bicentenary year (we are in good company, as it is also the bicentenary on Waterloo!).

  6. I have just returned from walking around the lake, and I cannot begin to express my upset and sadness, at seeing those new nest boxes, so near to where the grebes were nesting, the now abandoned nest, and the grebes swimming forlornly around the lake.

I gather the boxes were put in yesterday with lots of noise, and undoubtedly vibrations, guaranteed to frighten the grebes. Why, on earth, have they been put so near to the grebes nest (if they were necessary at all, and why a week or two before the grebe chicks would have hatched? (The parents had been constantly on the nest for at least two weeks)?

Who took the decision to put the boxes there, then? Was it a committee decision? Is there anyone on the committee who has any concern or knowledge of our native wildlife?

  7. Re: Night Fishing. Is there to be a ballot to determine whether this would be repeated this year? It was discussed and agreed at the AGM last April, that all members whose properties back directly onto the lake (in other words, those who could be potentially affected by night fishing activities) would have the chance to vote on whether this should be continued.

  8. I would just like to feed back what a super job I felt the tree maintenance team carried out recently, at the wooded end of the lake Ashmead Rise side…. such a difference. Thank you to all concerned.

      • I must comment on the excellent maintenance work currently being carried out at the northern end of the lake. The area looks so much better following the removal of diseased trees and the thinning out of much of the uncontrolled and unsightly growth of brambles and suckers. Sensible maintenance such as this can only preserve and enhance the natural beauty of the lake.

Well done to those involved in initiating this work; it’s long overdue, but well worth the wait.
