The Story

Back in 2002, I became aware that West Midlands Passenger Transport Sports and Social Club (the owners of Cofton Lake for the last 54 years) were proposing to sell the 17 acres of lake and surrounding land.  I called a meeting in the local village hall and invited the 60 residents who backed onto this lake with a view to us collectively purchasing this site to ensure that this lake and land be preserved.  A committee was formed to negotiate this possible purchase.

The ‘Committee’ followed many lines of enquiry to obtain funding, Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, Lickey Hills Society, Heritage Lottery Trust, Parish and County Council.  Many offers of help were available in maintaining this area but no financial support was forthcoming. As it was not possible to raise enough money from local residents alone, it was decided to offer the opportunity to purchase a share to a wider area.  A limited company was formed and membership shares sold at £1500 each to anyone interested in either fishing this lake or conserving the area.  34 shares were bought by White Swan Piscatorials fishing club who agreed to stock with fish, maintain paths, banks and trees.

It took a great deal of time and determination on behalf of the committee, but eventually enough monies were raised and our offer was accepted.  Solicitors were appointed and contracts were eventually signed and exchanged on 14th December 2004.

And so Cofton Lake Conservation Limited was born and this local beauty spot will be preserved for it’s wildlife, residents and visitors for generations to come.
